The "S" Is For Scott!

(Scott and his brother Chris)

It was about 18 months ago when my son Scott came to me and ask me to watch a YouTube video with him http://youtu.be/iInv7PTiRLw .  After I watched it he turn to me and said "Dad, I am going to work that hard! I will do what ever it takes! I am going to become the best I be so I can  help my team win a State Championship! Just like Chris!"(Chris was on the 2009 and 2010 State Championship Teams).   Nothing else was said.  He walked out of the room and went to work!

People have asked me what makes Scott tick?  What drives Him?  Well...Where do I start?

Since Scott was a young boy he always knew what he wanted.  He has mental toughness, discipline, no fear and  a God given raw talent that he is constantly polishing.

When Scott was about 9 years old he told me he wanted to snow board.  He was an awesome skier but he had no vision of the mountain.  He could not see his way in and out of trouble.  His idea of skiing was to go as fast as he can and straight as he can.  No fear!  Needless to say this got him the reputation of "If you ski with Scott DO NOT follow Scott!  If you do be ready to jump off a cliff or hike your butt back up the mountain!".  So I told him when you have skied every run at the Bird (black Diamond) I will buy you a board.  I knew when he could ski anything he would have good "vision" and understand the mountain and be able to be a much better snowboarder.  By the end of the season he did it.  He came to me with a map of Snowbird and we cross off every black run.  He started snowboarding.  He is now vary strong snowboarder

He continues to push his limits.  When he was 14 years old he started mountain biking.  He was on a ride with a close friend and former Pro mountain biker.  As we unloaded our bikes I dared Scott to keep up!  Well keep up he did.  He road the tread off the back tire of this former pro rider.  When we stopped at the mid point, Scott gets off the bike and start to puke everywhere!  He was as white as a sheet!  We all felt the ride had come to an end!  Nope!  After a few minutes and re hydration Scott jumps on the bike and said "its not a Bingham Football workout unless someone pukes!".  He kicked all our butts that day.  He has no fear of sacrifice or physical pain. You know that pain that you feel during an intense workout and it makes you just want to quit.  If he falls he gets right back up!  When he says no he means it!  He sat out a  year of football when he felt bullied by a coach to play. When he says I can do it!  He backs it up!
He rides motocross. One day he wanted to ride my fuel injected KX450 on the motocross track.  I can do it dad! His feet did not even come close to touching the ground and we had to hold the bike up for him to get on it!  But you can guess what happened.  Yep!  he took off and road that bike like he had been dong it his whole life!

Scott is a shy kid.  Never one to boast.  When in interviewed by reports he is soft spoken  and direct and to the point.  To be more than that is not Scott.  He wonders what is the big deal?  My team works hard the line blocks we run pass and score.  The defense hits hard tackles and the other team does not!  Its a team effort!  If we work as a team we win.  If we do not work as a team we loose.  Its that simple!  Why do the reports don't get that?  That  sums it  for Scott.

Today as he puts the pads on one more time, maybe the last time, he is ready!  He has put the time in on and off the field!  According to the Deseret News he is 333 yards from a 2,000 yard season.  But for Scott that would be  icing its not what is really important today.  If he is used a decoy and not once touches the ball, he is ok with that.  Its about the team and a team win!

So to answer the question of what makes Scott Scott.  It's his  willingness to out work everyone.  Goes 100% every play, every ski run  or mountain bike ride.  He has no fear of failing because he understands that is just part of the process of getting better!   He eats healthy he goes to bed early, his work outs consists of weights, running, body resistance, mountain biking, hiking, snow boarding, swimming, SCUBA diving, motocross and when given the opportunity surfing. He goes on YouTube and studies workouts and other football players like AP for the Vikings. But  most important he is last one to  blow his own horn.  He speaks quietly but treads with confidence and an internal knowing he can do what ever he sets out to do!

Oh,ya and the big letter "S" on his chest under his shoulder pads, on his shoes and gloves is not what you may think it is.  The "S" is for Scott the man of hard work, dedication, nerves of steal and leads by example! Scott is my super hero!   Good luck today son!  Now go get your dream!

Right Here! Right Now!
